Perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with us

Our Young Company has been performing annually at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe since 2009 with a variety of shows. The company now perform specifically children's shows based on traditional folk tales, tailored to the size of the group and their individual talents. Each show has a set of original songs composed by ex member - actor/musician/MD Jack Quarton. Shows in the repertoire are: Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz.

“The word that most immediately springs to mind is 'joy'. Onstage and in the auditorium there is joy. This is the enthusiastic retelling of the story of Aladdin, by Flying High Young Company, with songs (catchy), dance (creative choreography), lots of fun, and the kind of performing passion that should never be allowed to fade. There are several performers here who have industrial strength charisma already and the entire ensemble does not carry a single passenger” Aladdin 2021

The Young Company stay in Edinburgh at the beginning of August for 11 days, living together, performing together, promoting the show together and experiencing all that the world's largest arts festival has to offer. This is a unique opportunity offered to the eldest members of Flying High each year and a highlight of the company’s calendar.

The Young Company performing in Edinburgh reunite just before Christmas to perform their children’s show locally in Arnold at the Bonington Theatre for 5 shows across 2 days. This whole project gives some insight into how a theatre company might live and work in a professional manner.

Actor / Musician

Jack Quarton

‘I’m an actor-musician, composer and musical director, and have worked in regional theatres all around the country and in the West End. Today’s theatre industry is extremely challenging, and rewards those who are able to create as well as perform. I learned this approach as a young person at Flying High, where – in addition to performing – I had opportunities to compose scores, work as a musical director on productions for the Edinburgh Festival and develop skills in sound design that have proved to be invaluable. The company’s emphasis on creating and devising – in addition to core skills and technique – have had a valuable and lasting impact on my approach to my work. The company helped me enormously when preparing for drama school training, and I wouldn’t be working in this industry without the support and encouragement of Flying High.

What People Say!

‘Flying High is a fantastic community that I have had the privilege of being part of for ten years now! Not only has Flying High helped me develop my performing skills it has also helped me develop my confidence, life skills and ability to look forward in life. The sense of community and family at Flying High is one of the main things that has kept me coming for so long as Carrie has built an incredible atmosphere where we can feel safe to express ourselves and we have so many chances to meet people we may never have met. Flying high has definitely made me friends for life.’

‘My oldest child has been attending Flying High since the age of three and now at eighteen she is helping out as an assistant tutor. I can honestly say that Flying High and the brilliant friends she has made along the way have been a consistent and fantastic influence in her life. Her experiences include attending and performing at the Edinburgh Festival which was an amazing experience for her. Now my youngest son is happily following in her footsteps and loving every minute of it.’

‘Flying High has been just fantastic for my son. He was such a quiet, shy boy but since joining Flying High he has really come out of his shell and blossomed in confidence. He has found a love for drama in the supportive and nurturing environment which has also challenged him to develop a real talent. I never thought my shy boy would be able to perform on stage to a packed Theatre Royal! Thank you Flying High!’

‘I’ve been coming to Flying High for almost six years now and am now planning on going to university this year so i’ve been at Flying High during a big part of my teenage years. And through this i’ve not only developed my performance skills but life skills such as confidence and self-belief. After taking a break during the pandemic I was welcomed back warmly by Carrie and other staff members which highlights the professionalism and commitment the team have at Flying High. I’ve always felt, in all of the different groups I’ve been involved in, a nice sense of community and support from the staff working with us.’

‘I have been to see many Flying High shows over the last few years and I have to say, they never fail to produce a good show. Cable street was absolutely fantastic, I went to see it twice. I’m very excited to see what they do next.’

We would love to have you

Wind / Rush Generation(s) by Mojisola Adebayo
Our Young Company will be heading to Derby Theatre on Sunday 28th April to perform their 2024 NT Connections play, Wind / Rush Generations by Mojisola Adebayo. This is a play about the British Isles, its past and its present. Set in a senior common room, in a prominent university, a group of first year undergraduates are troubled, not by the weight of their workload, but by a ‘noisy’ ghost. So they do what any group self-respecting and intelligent university students would do in such a situation – they get out the Ouija Board to confront their spiritual irritant and lay them to rest – only to be confronted by the full weight of Britain’s colonial past – in all its gory glory. However, if you think you know about British history, Empire, slavery, economics, racism and humanity, then this play might get you to think again. Recommended for ages 15+
