New projects on the horizon

Happy New Year! Flying High’s 20th Birthday Year!
In July 1999, after operating as Jumping Beans for five years, Flying High Expressive Arts was launched to expand our provision for young people to gain access to and explore the arts as a medium of expression and performance.
As we move into our 20th year, we've been having a good old think about what more we can offer our members to mark the occasion.
This year we are going to be celebrating our Birthday with a special page of memories on the website, a themed summer showcase and an Open Day type event where we celebrate the achievements of members past and present (the eldest of which turned 30 last year and we are now having the next generation involved!)
Here are a few of these projects and more which we have in mind which may come about some time soon:
Summer Showcase – Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 July 2019 – Bonington Theatre
One which will definitely happen is our annual showcase! This will involve all our groups performing pieces to celebrate 20 years of Flying High.
All pieces will focus on events, styles, ideas, scripts since the millennium and we will reconstruct some pieces from the past.
"We’re gonna party like it’s 1999!"
Edinburgh Festival Fringe – Wednesday 31 July – Sunday 11 August (Tuesday 13 August)
Following the success of sell-out shows of Peter Pan, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast over the last three years, our Young Company will be taking ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year.
It will be a 50-minute version written by Carrie Bird with songs by Jack Quarton and it will be performed for nine consecutive days at the beginning of August.
Anyone visiting the festival this year, please let us know and come to support us.
Isle of Man Youth Theatre Exchange
We have been talking to a Youth Theatre known to us in the Isle of Man for a couple of years now and feel that in October of this year, it might be a great opportunity for one of our older Youth Theatre groups or Young Company to visit this small but beautiful island and share some theatre with them.
The following year, we would be host to their Youth Theatre.
Watch this space!
We would love the word to be spread around that we have some spaces in our Positive Moves Dance group for young people aged 8 – 16 who love dancing but lack confidence.
It is a great workshop and the group have created some wonderful pieces working together but our numbers are low and it would be good to have a few more involved.
Click here to find out more about it and watch the video below to have a look at what the group is like!
This group begins on Tuesday 8 January for young children aged 18 months – 3 years and will be led by Georgie who has been leading a similar group at Lakeside Arts which sadly has had to close.
We would love to really make this group work and if anyone has any connections, please pass the word on.
Singer/Song Writing Academy
We are looking to open a Singer/Song Writing Academy led by Tash Bird very soon, linked to the one run by Inspire Youth Arts and based at the Old Library in Mansfield.
It would involve singing techniques, accompanying instruments – particularly guitar and ukulele - and structures to be able to write songs.
We would set up small gigs from time to time to showcase work and be involved in Inspire Youth Arts events as and when possible.
Please let Carrie or Tash know if you are interested.
And if you have any feedback with any of these ideas then please do get in touch and share your thoughts!
