We are so sorry to have to say ‘Farewell’ to two very special people who have worked for and supported Flying High for many years and were particularly valuable during the lockdowns of the last two years.

Mat Drew came to Flying High as a member when he was 3 years old as his mum, Sue was teaching for us at that time. Having taken his GCSE Drama with us, he moved on to take his A Level Drama and Theatre Studies, gaining a top grade before going to University to study journalism. Mat performed 4 times with Young Company at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and was Mowgli in 2014’s Jungle Book. Since qualifying at University, Mat with his passion and interest in theatre and the arts, has worked with Flying High CIC to develop its social media presence and newsletter. During lockdown, we are indebted to his passion to create an online Edinburgh Fringe week in August 2020 which showcased a number of our productions since 2009. This also raised the much needed finance to ensure that a Young Company group could take part in 2021. Mat works tirelessly for the NHS in digital media and has recently been promoted which makes it difficult for him to continue. We thank him hugely for all his hard work and efforts and I know he will be happy to work with us again from time to time. Sophie Hatton, one of our tutors has now taken over the role and is doing a brilliant job to continue the high standards set.

Georgie Saunders has made the extremely difficult decision to move on from Flying High CIC after working for us for 10 years! Georgie came to us directly from University, having graduated with a degree in Dance and before this, I had taught her AS Level Dance at Christ the King School. Georgie has taught literally hundreds of children and young people in her time with us, created 40 or more dance pieces, worked on summer projects, Edinburgh shows and supported so many young people wishing to pursue a career in dance. In addition to Flying High work, Georgie has led a large number of groups and initiated many projects for our partners, Inspire Youth Arts and Gedling Borough. She has set up Next Door Dance Company based in Nottingham with Jennifer Manderson, one of our Flying High directors and has performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Three years ago, Georgie started to work for the Royal Ballet delivering their Primary Steps programme which she loves in the Mansfield area and she is in the middle of her MA in dance teaching – a very busy lady! Recently, she has been offered the role of part time lecturer in Dance at Lincoln University which she is very excited to be starting. Clearly this has meant that her regular work with us has to come to an end so Toni Tailor-Bird, who works with our Lamda students and with our Junior Drama 1 will be taking over the Inter/Senior Youth Theatre group on a Saturday morning and we have yet to decide between two highly qualified dance applicants as to who will be leading our Youth Dance group.

Georgie will be leading the dance provision on our summer project from 16th – 19th August 2022 and other one off projects in future school holidays, time permitting. In the meantime, we would like to thank Georgie for all her hard work with Flying High CIC and wish her every success for her future ventures.
